Organize Your World and Save a Tree with Evernote

Evernote - Automatically OrganizeI spent the last few days with a couple hundred other pastors and listening to speakers. As I panned around the room on more than one occasion, I noticed the wide variety of note taking techniques. When it comes to organization and keeping track of all of the “that’ll preach!” bits of life that we encounter every day, I know that most of us have our methods. As I panned around the room, I saw good old fashioned spiral notebooks, devices ranging from ancient Windows pocket PC’s to iPhones to laptops and iPads. On those devices, I saw such a wide range of software that was also employed. Some of these devices sync to a computer but, many times, these notes sync with an application that does not have any sort of organization other than date stamps. How do we keep things organized?

Evernote logoAbout a year ago, a youth pastor friend introduced me to Evernote. “Evernote makes it easy to remember things big and small from your notable life using your computer, phone, and the web.”

Evernote will allow you to jot notes, snap pictures (even with GPS so you can remember exactly where you were when you snapped it), record audio or video, even clip web pages. “Chances are, if you can think of it, Evernote can help you remember it.”

Everything you capture into Evernote is instantly processed and indexed automatically. Even words found in a snap shot are indexed! If you want, you can even add your own tags (labels that will quickly remind you of the content), and organize them into different “notebooks”. This keeps the organization power in your hands. You can find anything fast!

Here’s the best part! Evernote is FREE! I guess they figure there is no price tag that can be put on it. Actually, there is a paid subscription level that opens a few enterprise features and removes the in-application ads (that I never even notice). Evernote does not limit the amount of items you have in your notebooks, but the amount of data that is synced per month to the elephants in the clouds (see video). I have yet to even come close to this limit.

With all of the applications across the different platforms and devices, you will always have access to your notes and it will no longer be necessary to keep that enormous paper wad in your pocket. There are apps for Mac and PC, iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad), Android, Windows Phone 7, Palm, Blackberry, and web access. Download your application easily! There are extensions for web browsers that allow you to easily clip web pages as well.

It is hard to go wrong with this amazing service! Give it a try and see how you like it. If you are already using Evernote, how has it helped you get organized? How many notes do you have? As always, feel free to ask questions!
